Participants will receive an order of baby chicks on March 19 and care for them until the first Saturday in August. Rutherford County 4-H'ers that are interested in raising pigs should contact Mr. Michael at the 4-H office now. The deadline for ownership is coming up in October, so it is very important to order your hogs' ear tags now.

The 4-H swine project is a great animal project for beginners and experienced 4-H'ers alike. One 4-H'er can raise two pigs in an area no larger than 8' by 16'. Plus, this project allows 4-H'ers to raise an animal from weaning to the show ring in less than four months!

Rutherford County 4-H Wins State Horse Judging Contest

The 2011 Tennessee 4-H Horse Championships kicked off with the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest. Eleven teams competed to represent Tennessee at the Southern Regional and Eastern National horse judging contests. Rutherford County (1293 points) edged out Putnam County (1278 points) for the title. Blount County A (1242 points) finished third followed by Robertson County (1222 points). Montgomery County (1200 points) rounded out the top five.

Rutherford County team members are Shana Boteler, Faith Duke, Kara Lay and Jessie McMahon. Pat Kayser and Mitchell Mote coached the Rutherford County team. The Putnam County team consisted of Kelsey Bussell, Katie Clark, Lindsay Hensley and Jenny Iwanyszyn. Shana Boteler of Rutherford County was the contest high individual. She received the $250 Meadows Family Award for her achievement.

Chick Chain Feed Study

Country Ham Project Group (grades 6-12)

Due to modern technology many skills that our ancestors used to survive are being lost. The Country Ham Project Group is designed to teach young people the old-fashioned way ham was cured by our ancestors, without artificial preservatives. Mr. Bob Woods of G&W Hamery in Murfreesboro teaches the skills needed to cure a country ham and the business and background of the Hamery. This process takes several months and over the time spent at the hamery the 4-H members learn other skills besides just how to cure a ham. After the hams are cured Mr. Bob enters the 4-H members’ hams in competition where they can win ribbons and prize money. The hams are ready to be taken home by early November and enjoyed by your family. Our first meeting will be Monday, November 8th at 5:30 pm at G&W Hamery, 411 W. Lytle St., Murfreesboro. 4-H Pottery Group

Rutherford County has a new afterschool group, it’s the 4-H Pottery Group! This group will learn the art of pottery making by hand in a fun setting. The participants meet at a local pottery studio then make 3 to 4 projects that they get to create, glaze, and then take home in a month's time frame. This group will meet once a week for a month from 5pm to 7pm. All sessions are taught by the studio owner. Your creative side will shine! Space is limited and there is a class fee of $60.
*Dates for the sessions are: October 12, October 19, October 26, and November 2.*

Would you like to be a member of the 4-H Poultry Judging Team? You don't have to know a thing about chickens! It is time to begin our practices. This year, we are excited to have two adult volunteers that will be serving as assistant coaches for our team. They are Dawn Reshonsky and Suzanne Caum. Thanks goes out to them for donating their time to working with our team!

Rutherford County 4-H Horse Member Wins National Award

Rutherford County 4-H Horse Club member Shelby Finch was recently awarded the 2009 High Point Award in equitation (ages 11 and under) by the National Walking Horse Owners Association. Shelby is a 5th grader at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School in Murfreesboro and has been active in the 4-H horse club for two years. We are very proud of her accomplishment.

Our January meeting was held at the Horse Science Center, where they held the annual barn scavenger hunt. They gave away prizes for the winners with the most points in each division. Once again we would like to say thanks to The M.T.S.U. Equestrian team and any other volunteers involved in the Rutherford County 4-H.

National 4-H Cornbread Cook-Off

ATTENTION ALL 4th GRADERS:

Tennessee 4th grade 4-H club members are invited to celebrate cooking and cornbread by entering a recipe in the National 4-H Cornbread Cook-off Contest. Recipes should be creative and easy to prepare and must contain at least one cup of Martha White Corn Meal or one package of Martha White Corn Meal Mix and be cooked in Lodge Cast Iron Cookware.
Novice cooks should submit their entries by March 2, 2010 to Vicki Lofty, Marion County UT Extension, 302 Betsy Pack Drive, Jasper, TN 37347.

Recipes will be reviewed and 10 lucky 4-H’ers will be invited to participate in the youth cook-off at the National Cornbread Festival on April 24, 2010 in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Finalists will have one hour from start to finish to prepare their cornbread dish. Judging of the finished recipe will be based on creativity; texture, appearance, ease of preparation, appropriate use of products and of course - flavor!

The 4-H slogan is “Learn by Doing”, so 4th grade 4-H’ers get in the kitchen and learn to cook. Prepare a yummy cornbread dish that will make mouths water! Prize are as follows: 1st place - $400; 2nd place - $200; 3rd Place - $100 and the other seven finalists will each receive $50. All 10 finalists also receive special gifts from Lodge Cast Iron and Martha White. The 4-H agent or 4-H Program Assistant and the teacher of the winning contestant will each receive $50. Youth traveling more than 100 miles to the competition will receive $100 travel money.

Vicki Lofty, Marion County UT Extension Agent invites youth from all regions of the country to enter. “Every year I am amazed at the amazing tasty and creative recipes that are submitted,” said Lofty. To celebrate 100 years of UT Extension and 4-H in Tennessee, Marion County 4-H Clubs have compiled a cookbook containing a collection of recipes from the past finalists in the National Cornbread Festival Cook-off. Funds from the sale of the six dollar cookbooks will be used to fund 4-H youth projects and activities. For more information about purchasing a cookbook or the cook-off contact 423-942-2656. If you haven't heard, Rutherford County has a Shooting Sports group. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 19 from 6-8 p.m. This is a hands-on project group focused on teaching 4-H members the art of riflery and archery. We meet at the Lane Agri-Park Community Center located at 315 John R Rice Blvd in Murfreesboro. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q: Do I have to have my own equipment?
A: No, all equipment will be provided for you. We have Genesis compound bows for archery and Daisy 5 Meter Competition BB guns for our rifle team.

Q: Is there a cost to participate?
Y: Yes, there is a $30 fee for the year (October-April). This helps to cover the cost of equipment, insurance, and volunteer certification training.

Q: Who is allowed to participate?
A: The 4-H Shooting Sports Group is open to all Rutherford County youth in the 4-12 grades. You do not have to have 4-H offered in your school in order to join.

Q: Is it safe?
A: Absolutely! There has never been a recorded injury in the TN Shooting Sports Program.

Q: What do I need to bring to the first meeting?
A: Each participant will need to complete an Activity and Event Acceptance Form found here: http://www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/forms/acrobat/f600a.pdf The event name is “Rutherford County 4-H Shooting Sports 09-10”

Q: What is the schedule for the year?
A: Meetings are scheduled to be held on Oct. 22, Nov. 19, Dec. 17, Jan. 21, Feb. 16, Mar. 18, and Apr. 15. The range opens at 6:00 and will close at 7:30.

RCNN Begins Work on Music Video!

Our main group project for November and December is going to be creating a music video for WGNS Radio's morning show, "Swap 'n Shop." The following video is very short, but it is pretty funny to watch (the stacked chairs represent a llama). Look for the completed music video toward the end of the year.

The Fair is Back in Town!

After more than a 15 year hiatus, Rutherford County will host a 4-H Fair on August 8, 2009. Rutherford County youth in the 4-12 grades as of January 1, 2009 are eligible to compete in more than 40 different classes with premiums of over $1,500. Categories in the fair include art, baking, clothing, gardening, photography, crafts, entomology and needlework. In addition, there will be an archery tournament, poultry show, dairy show and a livestock show. Entry to the fair is free and open to the public.

The 4-H Fair will take place at the Rutherford County UT/TSU Extension Office located at 315 John R Rice Blvd. in Murfreesboro. Extension Agent Michael Shirley says, “With the completion of our new livestock barn and community center, we felt like the time was right to bring the fair back to town. In the past several years, if a Rutherford County youth wanted to compete in a fair competition, they would have to go to a neighboring county’s fair. Now, they will be able to show off their work right here at home.”

Rutherford County’s fair will kick-off at 9:00 in the morning with the 4-H Poultry Show and Sale. A record 42 4-H’ers have been raising Barred Rock chickens through the Chick Chain program. Each 4-H’er will bring their five best chickens to compete in the show. After the show, the chickens will be auctioned off to raise money for the 4-H poultry project.

Immediately following the poultry show and sale, the dairy show will begin. Youth from Rutherford and Marshall Counties will exhibit several different breeds of dairy cattle. The inaugural Rutherford County 4-H archery tournament will begin at 1:00 PM followed by the livestock show at 4:00 PM.

Throughout the day, the community center will be open and spectators can view the entries submitted in the various categories. There will also be a barbeque dinner and auction in the community center beginning at 6:00 PM. All money received will go directly to the 4-H Program of Rutherford County.

4-H and Nickelodeon Partner to Launch New Online Game

National 4-H Council has partnered with Nickelodeon's "Big Green Help" to create a brand-new, interactive online game-- "Flip N' Flow"--featuring the network's animated boy-genius Jimmy Neutron. The game is in support of 4 H's Science, Engineering and Technology communication campaign to spark youth interest in science and prepare one million new young people for America's technology workforce.

Nickelodeon's "The Big Green Help" is a kid-led movement that provides information and tools to help explain climate change to young people, and connects them to energy-saving and earth-friendly activities in their everyday lives.

The "Flip N' Flow" game is available online at 4-H.org . Youth can play the game and access materials to share with friends. Check out this fun activity which gives youth and mentors the opportunity to learn about water conservation and challenges them think about steps they can take to participate in going green!

Hatching Success

Members of the 2008 Rutherford County 4-H Chick Chain project group recently gathered at the Old Fort Park Agriculture Center for the annual 4-H Poultry Show and Sale. Twenty-one 4-H’ers from across the county gathered for what will be the final 4-H event held at the Old Fort Park location as construction will soon begin on a tennis complex that will replace the livestock center.
The Chick Chain project is one of the 4-H program’s most popular offerings. Participants received 25 baby chicks in March and were responsible for their care until the poultry show held the Saturday before school resumed. Each 4-H’er selected their five best birds and entered them into the show. After the awards were given out to the winners, all the birds were auctioned off one pen of five at a time. The proceeds from the auction paid the original purchase price of the birds. All profits that were left-over went directly back to the 4-H’ers that participated in the show.
Members were also responsible for turning in a record book of their expenses and receipts along with at least a one-page essay describing the Chick Chain experience. Extension Agents then judged these records while the 4-H’ers competed in a Skill-a-Thon which tested their understanding of proper care of their chickens. Scores from the record book, Skill-a-Thon, and essay of each 4-H’er were averaged together. Olivia Gum from Kittrell was awarded the Grand Champion Exhibitor trophy for having the highest average. County Success at the Regional Goat Show

Seven Rutherford County 4-H'ers competed in the Central Region 4-H Market Goat Show held at the Bedford County Fair on Saturday, July 26.

All together they brought home 10 blue ribbons (out of 35 classes)! They also accumulated four seconds, three thirds, four fourths, and two fifth place awards. Sara Beth Young was also chosen as the Reserve Champion in the Junior High Showmanship Class.

4-H Cooking Classes Offered

MURFREESBORO-The Rutherford County Extension office is offering 4-H Basic Cooking classes in July. There will be a class for 4th and 5th graders on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 and a class for 6th – 8th graders on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. These classes will cover the basics of measuring, baking and cooking terms. They will participate in cooking activities and will get to sample their dishes.

Both classes will be held from 9:30am to 1:00pm. They will be held at the Extension office at Lane-Agri Park, 315 John R. Rice Blvd., Murfreesboro. Each class is limited to ten youth. Cost is $5.00. It is almost time for our 2nd Annual Rutherford County 4-H Fundraiser. The fundraiser will be held on April 10 at our office at 315 John Rice Boulevard in Murfreesboro. We will be having a BBQ dinner catered by Whitt’s Barbeque. Dinner will include a BBQ sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, dessert and a drink. You can stay and eat with us or pickup you meal to go!

4-H Technology Camp June 30- July 3

4th Grade Public Speaking Contest Winners

More than 1,000 fourth graders from across Rutherford County gave speeches in their local 4-H school clubs. Of those participants, twenty competed in the county contest held on January 17, 2008. Below is a video of the top three winners in the county, as well as an interview with the first-place winner.

BTBY Goes Geocaching

Members of Rutherford County 4-H BTBY after-school club braved cold weather and whipping wind to try their skills at geocaching. The group divided into two teams and raced against each other to find four Frisbees hidden in the tall grass. The rules were simple: be the first team to find five separate coordinates and collect the Frisbee hidden there.

"It was fun," said Alyss Masundire. "We got to run around and find Frisbees."

Seventh grader Kathryn Gerard agreed. "I definitely want to try it again, but I think I'll wait until the spring."

4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery Contest Winners

More than 120 youth participated in this year's 4-H Outdoor Meat Cookery Contest at the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville, Tennessee. The purpose of this 4-H activity is to safely prepare beef, poultry, lamb, and pork in an outdoor setting. The Franklin County Team did just that and more by bringing home victory. Overall the team placed 1st place in the Junior High Division of the Outdoor Meat Cookery Contest. John Winfield Garner placed first in the beef category, Forrest Duncan placed first in the poultry category, and Anthony Davis placed first in the pork category. The team won 1st place in the team presentation category with their use of the theme “Grillin’ Across Tennessee”.

"RFD-TV Live" host Orion Samuelson was going to talk with US Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns about the 2007 Farm Bill. 4-H News Reporter Brooke Nowicki was able to speak with Sec. Johanns before the show about the 2007 Farm Bill and his involvement in 4-H.

Rutherford County 4-H Network News' first ever video camp concluded yesterday with a private movie screening for the participants' family and friends. We all had a great time visiting and watching the four video stories that the 4-H'ers created. Below is one story about cats that are available for adoption at the local animal shelter.

Tennessee's 4-H Technology Camp was held earlier this month at Camp Ridley in Columbia, Tennessee. Campers learned how to use various types of new technology throughout the week. To highlight how technology can be used at an advanced level, the 4-H'ers were treated to a special event.

Two US Army Apache helicopters landed on the camp's athletic fields. The pilots talked to all the 4-H members about the different computer systems that are used for the operations of the aircraft.

Week One of Video Camp a Success

Rutherford County 4-H Network News completed its first week of Video Camp Thursday by filming at the local animal shelter. Nine 4-H members ranging from the fourth to the seventh grade have learned several new things throughout the first week. Topics covered during the first ever video camp included: What makes a good story?, Script Writing, Creating a Story Board, and Basic Filming Techniques.

Members of video camp decided to create two different stories about the local animal shelter. One group will make a video highlighting a puppy and a kitten that are available for adoption. The other 4-H'ers are making a movie to show people how to become a volunteer at the shelter.

During week two of Video Camp, our team will learn how to edit their film footage as well as publish it to the Internet for the world to view! If you are interested in joining RC 4-H Network News, contact our agent Mr. Michael at 615-898-7710.

Join the Rutherford County Extension Office as we celebrate June Dairy Day. The event is free and open for the entire family. Beginning at 9:00 am at the old ag center at Old Fort Park (near KidsCastle), you can take a hayride through a cow's life. At the end of the hayride, you may sample MTSU's award winning chocolate milk, as well as free ice cream, yogurt, cheese, and other milk products. There will also be games and you might just have an opportunity to milk a real cow by hand!!! The event will end at 1:00 pm. We hope to see you there!!!!

Approximately 40 states sent representatives to Lincoln, Nebraska last week to attend the National 4-H Science, Engineering, and Technology Conference. The goal of the conference was to increase their knowledge and skills for providing leadership in their state 4-H programs for designing and delivering high quality SET learning experiences to youth and adults. RC 4-H Network News sent Rachel Lee to cover the event and serve as one of Tennessee's liaisons.

Chick Chain Participants Say Chicks Growing Fast

On Friday, March 16, 13 4-H'ers from all across Rutherford County came to the Extension Office with one thing on their mind- chicken. They were not interested in a meal, but rather beginning a project that will last until August. These 4-H'ers are participating in the Rutherford County Chick Chain.

Each 4-H'er was given 25 baby female chicks. For the next five months, they will be responsible for feeding, watering, and general maintenance of their small flock of birds. At the end of the summer, each participant will choose five of their birds to show and sale at the County Poultry Show. The money that is raised from the sale will be used to buy the chicks for next year's project.

Public Speaking Contests

The Central Region's Sub-regional 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at Hermitage Elementary School in Davidson County. Rutherford County was represented in all grade levels.
All of the participants did a great job and represented Rutherford County well.

The Central Region's public speaking contest was held on Saturday, February 10th, at MTSU in Murfreesboro. Rutherford County was represented by three senior 4-H'ers. Each participant gave a prepared speech that lasted from five to seven minutes. They each also had to give an extemporaneous (spur-of-the-moment) speech. Rachel Lee won at the 10th grade level, and will represent Rutherford County at the Sate Public Speaking Contest held in Nashville during the annual State 4-H Congress.
